Aros Bay Slip and Landing Now Open

Post by BlowingOldBoots »

Aros Bay is a lovely spot just around from Tobermory. There has been a ruined slipway, rails, sheds here for a decades.

The slipway has now been repaired with a new floating pontoon added at the end. The pontoon is for tenders only, canoes, SUPs and such like.

Although there are moorings in the bay, I have anchored here a few times with no issues. It will be an easy landing and is a lovely walk to Tobers, 20 minutes if your health is not that good, a brisk 10 minutes for fit people.

Good news for the decrepit, there will be a water taxi between Tobers and Aros.

From THA FB post.
📣 AROS WATERFRONT UPDATE 📣

🤩 Elated to finally announce The Aros Waterfront site is now open for public use.
We are delighted with the outcome of this once dilapidated, unusable space which has been developed into a safe environment for all recreational water users, giving them a safe space to enter the water without having to navigate through moorings and larger afloat traffic in Tobermory Bay!
(Building not open yet)

‼️Please be aware of the following:

SAFETY: adhere to all safety signage, take care on the slipway and quayside as very slippy due to tidal conditions. Use walkway where possible and hold onto the rope on the slipway. The pier is shorter than previous days therefor NO JUMPING off! Beware of rocks on either side!

PARKING: NO PARKING on site, drop off & pick up only, except disabled badge holders (badge must be displayed)

SLIPWAY: Kayaks, paddleboards & wild swimmers.
Hand-Launching below 4m ONLY - contact THA for fees payable.

Pontoon: Adhere to all safety signage, NO overnight berthing, tenders ONLY. Please note the Water Taxi has priority landing.
Commercial Operators: Contact THA for prices.

STORAGE: Up to 300sqm of storage compound space is available for use to store equipment relating to outdoor activities. Please contact us for options on remaining availability.

Pics below of before and after of the work that went into redeveloping this site.
We have shortened the pier and created a new walkway, unpinning the structure and adding a new pontoon which allows all tidal access.
It was important to us to repurpose materials on site, using the excess rock as infill and the local granite stone to frame the new walkway. The only new materials used were concrete and railings, everything else is recycled material from the original structure, lovingly restored by local craftsmen.

Redeveloping this site would not have been possible without the support from our:

Funders; Argyll and Bute Council Highlands and Islands Enterprise The Scottish Government
Contractors; Beadoun Plant Hire TSL Contractors

We thank you all and appreciate your support!

The redeveloped boat house at Aros is currently not open.

From some correspondence with Tobermory Harbour Association.
... there will be further information for our 'afloat' visitors in due course ... the waterfront building and its facilities which shall be available once open! ... the addition of showers, toilets and cafe ...
